History of Missouri Casinos
Riverboat gambling was voted in via a state-wide referendum in 1992, making Missouri the fifth state to approve this form of gambling. Since by law riverboats are not required to cruise, most of the Missouri casinos are built on top of a docked barge. This gives them the aesthetic appearance of a land-based casino, rather than a riverboat.
When Missouri riverboat casinos first began operating, by law they were required to cruise. The riverboats typically held a two-hour gaming session with a $500 loss-limit. The law was changed in early 2000 to no longer require sailing. This allowed for continuous boarding onto the boat. Furthermore, a state-wide referendum in late 2008 eliminated the state’s $500 loss limit provision.
